Week 2 Training: June 24 – June 30

Training Summary:

Bike – 8.8 miles, Swim – 1,500m, Run/Walk – 6.6 miles

I have to confess, that week 2 of training got off to a good, easier start than I expected.  Maybe this exercise lark isn’t quite so bad after all.

Monday was a blustery day (think Pooh Bear!), so the cycle route was going to be a little more difficult.  Right enough, got out to William Street and was faced with a fairly strong head wind.  We made our way along the path and it certainly felt like we were going a lot slower than last week.  My new padded cycling shorts, however, made the distance pass so much more comfortably!  Distance covered – 6.88 miles – 43:12 – a whole 2 seconds faster than last time!!  If that was with a strong head wind, things are looking up :-).

Tuesday was treadmill day – plan said run 7 mins, walk 1 min x 3, but on reflection, for my second week, I realised this was way too much too soon.  Instead, I opted for run 4 mins, walk 2 mins x 4.  Distance covered 2.11 miles.  Average 13:47 min/mile.

Wednesday is swim day – 1,500 meters this week – would have been easier had the sound system in the pool area at the gym been working.  I’ve decided that without music, swimming lengths is boring!

Back to the treadmill on Thursday again.  Again, I varied from the plan to do run 4 mins, walk 2 mins x 5 (spot the trend!).  Distance covered 2.48 miles.  Average 14:09 min/mile.

So the end to another week was nigh – well working week at least.  Now, I’m not one to look for excuses (hmmm?!), but it was even windier on Friday than it had been on Monday.  It was wet (or had been) and the thought of humphing the bikes in and out of the car did not appeal (even though I don’t actually do anything to put them in/take them out!).  So, needless to say, it didn’t take much encouragement for Mr Mullen to agree that we would leave our cycle for Friday.

Saturday was to be treadmill day.  But alas, already laziness had gotten the better of me.  Destined to fail before I’ve properly started – this is not good.  My head was down all day, wishing I had just made the effort to go to the gym.

So, with renewed vigor, on Sunday morning, I made the 6 min journey to the gym – yes, it’s only 6 minutes away in the car – so no excuse for not going!!  Plan was to do Saturday’s 2 mile run and make up for the missing bike ride on Friday.  Distance covered 2.01 miles.  Average 13:35 min/mile.

I opted to use the bike with the seat that has a back (as recommended by my physio), but for whatever reason, I just did not find it comfortable.  Distance covered – 2 miles.  Better than nothing I suppose.

So, Week 2 Training, complete with its ups and downs – DONE!

Week 1 Training: June 17 – June 23

Training Summary:

Bike – 14 miles, Swim – 1,000m, Run/Walk – 5.2 miles.

It was with great trepidation that week 1 of training started.  It’s been over 2 years since I did any running (inagural Scottish Kilomathon), and an ongoing foot injury and being on the slightly portly side, did not bode well!

Monday was a “break me in gently” day – or meant to be!  It ended up being 7.2 miles along a local cycle path.  First time I’d been on my bike for I don’t know how many years!  Tracked the route using mapmyfitness (great app) and it worked out at 7.2miles in 50 mins.  Not the greatest of starts.  My backside was left feeling as though I was sitting on golf balls.  Add new padded cycling shorts and a gel seat to the shopping list asap!

Tuesday was the first “running” day.  Now, I’ve picked up a Jeff Galloway training plan which is specifically designed for the Dopey Challenge.  It was due to start on July 1, so I have a couple of weeks to “break” myself in – hopefully not literally!  So, first “run” ended up being run 4 mins, walk 2 mins x 2 – distance covered 1.2 miles – well, you gotta start somewhere!!

Wednesday – 1,000m swim.  Swimming isn’t a strong point (neither is running!), so this was an achievment in itself managing to swim that far without drowning!

Thursday – run 4 mins, walk 2 mins x 2 – distance covered 1.66 miles – wow –  managed to up my pace (if you can call it that) a little.

Friday – along the same cycle route as Monday.  This time, mapmyfitness tells me it’s only 6.83miles – WTF??  Oh well, still, managed to do it in 43:14 this time.  Excellent progress!

Saturday.  Well, what can I say, the plan says 2 miles.  Now, the weekend is always going to be my hardest time for getting out there and excercising.  Basically because I’m a lazy ass!  So instead of going to the gym, I opted for walking the dogs.  All four of them.  At separate times I hasten to add!  Distance covered – 2.42 miles.

Dopey Challenge?  What’s all that about then?

Well, on January 9, 2014 my husband (Jim) and I will be running our first ever Dopey Challenge.  This is Disney’s latest event at Walt Disney World in Florida.  It consists of a 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon on consecutive days, starting on January 9.

Now it has to be said, that I am, by no means, what you would call a runner!  Far from it.  I more likely fall into the slightly overweight, sedentary office worker category!

It just so happened that I was browsing through Facebook of a Friday evening (as you do) and came across runDisney’s latest post – “New Event at Walt Disney World”.  “Hmm, what could that be”, I thought to myself.  On further investigation it was clear that this was a challenge like no other – or certainly no other that I’ve ever considered!

“Fancy doing this” I said to Jim, passing him my iPad.  “That would be great” he said in reply.  Inwardly I groaned.  What had I done????

So, on April 9, I sat at my desk, counting down the hours until entry for the challenge opened.  12noon US time, 5pm here in the UK.  With more than a little trepidation, I signed us both up.

It’s now June, and I have started my training – oh yes, I have started already (remember the sedentary office worker part?!).  I’ll share with you the highs and lows of my weekly schedule and look forward to any comments/tips/support from those who decide to follow me – let’s face it, I’m going to need all the help I can get!!!
